Fine Art Friday- American Kestral

The American Kestrel
The Kestrel is a member of the falcon family and some of the most beautiful of all birds of prey.
We had a pair nesting in a bird box in our pasture for several years and I could watch them for hours.
They also keep the mice down. A Big plus+
This week I'd like to share with you a wood carving and a painting I have done of the American Kestrel. The painting was done in Gouache and actually done after I had finished the carving. I took this picture of it framed and the glass makes it look a bit fuzzy. Sorry
This is a wood carving I had done for a commission. I block it out of a solid piece of wood,(Gelutong or Tupelo Gum). Lay in the feather patterns and carve with a dremel. I then wood burn all the feathers to show all the detail. After sealing it I paint it with several washes of acrylic paint. The eyes are glass and I paint them from the back side.
It takes me about 3 months to complete a piece like this and yes it was very expensive!
But my client was thrilled with the end results.

I spend many hours studying the groups of feathers and how they grow from the body. You almost have to be an Ornithologist just to figure it out. The base itself is made from a solid chunk of wood carved to look like pottery, Cactus, a broken arrowhead and stones all make for a natural setting.

Lots to post today! One of my Murals and A Thank You!

Well I still haven't gotten a chance to start the new blog yet, Crazy busy work week. I usually slow down after Christmas, but not this year. Whats up with that???? So I'm going to share one of my favorite Murals I've done on this blog today.

                                       Tuscan Bistro
This was a parade home I did a few years ago. It was down in a basement and I worked using spotlights. All the builders were all working at the same time to try and finish up, every time they started a table saw the power went out. LOL. A little frustrating but such a fun job!
The door leads to a wine cellar, The builder wanted me to do an outdoor scene of a Tuscan Bistro. Like your looking onto a street.
I did the sky with clouds, but you can't tell in the picture, All of the faux stones, plants, shutters, etc.

This is a shot of looking at the street lined with buildings. Lampposts, A clock tower in the distance, plants, etc.  I Loved doing this mural as the homeowners let me do what ever I wanted.
A little added info. Its done with regular latex wall paint, so its washable. The stone took me the longest.
I generally can do a mural in a day, This one for the sky, Two wall murals, stones,
took me four days to complete.
The pictures are a bit blurry, sorry!
So this is what I do for a living! I hope to share some how to's with you all in case you'd like to try your hand at faux finishes yourself.

Now a Thank you to a special lady!

I received this beautiful wrapped package in the mail recently from one of the sweetest ladies around!

This gorgeous card!!!!

And this beautiful fabric bag! Any guesses who its from?

Inside vintage postcards, ledger sheets wrapped with ribbon, another bag of treats. Chocolates!!!

Vintage embroidery floss and postcards. Have you guessed who yet?

And Yummy chocolates. This gal really gets me! LOL
Its all from the wonderfully talented Marie at  Lost Bird Studio
Marie does some of the prettiest French inspired things around. Swoon....
Do pop over and see her work, A must add to your blog list!
Thank you sweet Marie. I adore it all!!!!

Tag Tuesday- CCC- Christmas Leftovers

I'm just getting in under the wire for both these challenges. for Tag Tuesday at Kard Krazy   Its Christmas leftovers. A few things I hadn't put away yet. and At Studio L3.  for the CCC its scribble stains distress. Well let me tell you those little bottles hold a lot of ink. I dropped my bottle of green ink and it went everywhere, All over me and the floor, What a mess. I used almost an entire pkg of baby wipes trying to mop it up. Threw my robe in the wash. Yes I was covered in green ink. Now just wondering how on earth I'm going to get the rest of this ink off my hands. They are a lovely shade of green!
The stamps are from Oxford Impressions Sleigh Bells collection.
